ABOUT THE PAINTING... "Northumberland Gold" is a scene located in Hope Township (now technically re-named 'Municipality of Port Hope - Ward 2' ....) but will always be Hope Township to those that live here. It was a crisp clear autumn day when I stumbled upon this scene while driving around looking for interesting things to photograph. The light was perfect and at just the right angle to light up the tall grasses and reeds into dazzling golds and yellows. I added some extra crimson foliage in the distant white cedars and tamaracks so I could put some interesting colours in the water reflections. I chose a wider more panoramic size for this painting because it just seemed to fit better compositionally. The male and female mallard couple added the extra 'life' to the scene, but I kept them intentionally small so as to not stand out too much. I made little painted paper cutouts of the mallards to place around the painting until I could find the right location for them in the scene. One of my personal favourite paintings.
